From his early debut, in '69, in the court of Miles Davis (with whom he appeared on such successful albums as Jack Johnson, Big Fun, At Fillmore), and from another important experience as the one with drummer Elvin Jones' group, Grossman has matured an eclectic style in which the Rollinsian matrix is recognizable first and foremost, but also the syntactic turn imprinted by John Coltrane, common to all tenor saxophonists of the new generation. However, clearly privileging Rollins. Grosman avoided the shoals of formalism, premeditation, and excessive use of patterns, which seem to afflict many of the so-called post-Coltraneians, similar to each other as if they had come off an assembly line.
