Sure Grand Out is the third recording by pianist, composer, and bandleader Myra Melford's acclaimed Fire and Water Quintet, continuing an artistic journey inspired by the paintings of Cy Twombly and the relationship between innovation and tradition. Throughout her distinguished career, Melford has balanced fearless improvisation with a deep understanding of melody, harmony, counterpoint, and groove, and this latest release further develops that vision through a remarkable ensemble featuring saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, guitarist Mary Halvorson, cellist Tomeka Reid, and percussionist Lesley Mok. Together, the quintet combines lyrical beauty, boundless energy, and collective improvisation into a richly textured musical landscape.
Building upon the foundations established by For the Love of Fire and Water (2022) and Hear the Light Singing (2023), Melford composed this new collection with an even greater understanding of each musician's unique artistic voice. Employing an evolving cellular compositional approach, she created music flexible enough to grow organically through the creative contributions of her collaborators, all accomplished composers and bandleaders in their own right.
